Those first few weeks with a new baby can feel like a complete blur. The days are filled with feeding, cuddles, broken sleep and getting to know this tiny new person who has suddenly become your whole world.

They’re also incredibly fleeting.

As a London newborn photographer, I’m lucky enough to photograph families during these very early days, creating natural, timeless images that capture not only your newborn, but the connection between you as a family.

My natural light photography studio is based in Wimbledon, South West London, and is designed to be a calm, relaxed space for newborn and family photography.

Newborn photography in my Wimbledon studio

My studio newborn sessions are relaxed, baby-led and focused on capturing your baby naturally.

I don’t want your session to feel rushed or overly formal. Newborns have their own little routines, and we work around them. If your baby needs feeding, changing, cuddling or simply a little time to settle, we take that time.

The studio is filled with beautiful natural light, creating soft and timeless images without the need for artificial studio lighting.

Throughout the session, I’ll gently guide your baby into simple, natural positions while also capturing all those tiny details you’ll want to remember: their little hands and feet, sleepy expressions, soft eyelashes and the way they curl up in your arms.

There is also plenty of time for photographs with you as parents and, where appropriate, siblings too.

When is the best time for a newborn photography session?

I generally recommend booking your newborn photography session within the first two weeks after your baby is born, as this is when babies tend to be sleepier and naturally curl up more easily.

That said, there isn’t a strict cut-off.

If your baby is a little older, we can still create beautiful newborn photographs. Your session may simply look slightly different as your baby becomes more alert and less likely to stay curled up and sleepy for long periods.

The most important thing is that you don’t feel pressured to rush. Every baby is different.

What happens during a newborn studio session?

When you arrive at my Wimbledon studio, we’ll take things slowly and get everyone settled.

Newborn sessions usually last around two to three hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, changing and settling your baby. There is absolutely no expectation for your baby to sleep throughout the entire session.

Once your baby is settled, I’ll guide you through the session, starting with some of the simpler newborn photographs before moving on to family and sibling images.

I’ll also make sure there is time for those natural moments in between. Some of my favourite photographs are often the ones that happen when nobody is looking at the camera.

What should you bring to a newborn photography session?

You really don’t need to bring lots with you.

I have a selection of baby clothing and wraps available in the studio, as well as everything needed to make the session comfortable for your baby.

For parents, I also have a curated client wardrobe available to use, with pieces chosen to work beautifully with the natural, timeless style of the photographs.

You’ll simply need your usual baby essentials, including nappies, feeds and anything your baby normally needs to settle.

A calm space for new parents

I know that getting out of the house with a newborn can feel like an achievement in itself.

That’s why I try to make the studio experience as easy and relaxed as possible. There’s no need to arrive with everything perfectly organised, and there’s certainly no expectation that your baby will behave perfectly for the camera.

Newborn photography is about capturing this stage of your life as it really is.

The sleepy cuddles. The tiny fingers. The newness of becoming a family.
